Established in 1880, Liberty is the oldest continuously “lived in” gold mining community in the state of Washington and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Parks. Rock formations surround the Liberty area. The town’s population once exceeded 200 with hotels, a general store, meat market, saloons, dance hall, barber shop, logging and mining companies, railroad, a sawmill, a doctor, post office and a school. The town site is surrounded by Wenatchee National Forest Land and you can still pan for gold in area streams, although you may have better luck finding agates or the Ellensburg Blues.
